I agree (Moonsound has a mixer tho, but only able to mix FM and WAVE)

The Moonsound has a high quality output filter which makes it sound
okay. But it sounds very 'thin' compared to other synths due to lack
of an effect engine. Some of it's ROM patches are very good, others
very bad. With (lots of) RAM it can easily produce better music than,
say, an el-cheapo PC wavetable card, using the right samples/user
patches.

I disagree. An AWE32/64 easily outperforms the Moonsound, _if used in
the right way_, because it has

- Far more detailed envelope settings
- Filters (cutoff/resonance)
- Effects (chorus/reverb/flanger/..)
- Tons of RAM (in a good configuration)

The default on-board ROM is crappy though. The Yamaha one is superior
because of size and quality.

Yep!
