Or use a once-writable CD. The transfer is probably a one-time thing,
right? And it's always a good to have a backup.
An option to get around the directory structure problem: compress the data
using an archiver that stores the directory structure. Copy the compressed
file to one partition and decompression to another partition. Decompression
will take a lot of time, but the upside is that there is less data to
transfer.
