As far as I know this is no problem at all, PDF files can contain text. This
text
is selectable, and you can search for words. You can even add a table of
contents
and links.

Acrobat is also good in recognizing text and figures, with this you have two
options:
* Let acrobat replace as much as possible by text, this is good for your
filesize
* Let acrobat place hidden text on the graphics, so that there will not be
any visible
differences with your original scanned image, but you can select text.
Sometimes
acrobat can not recognize the text, changes the font where it should not
change
and can even mess up figures. The drawback is the large filesize. (But
compresses
most of the time better than e.g. jpeg with the same visual quality)

For Linux PDF should not be a problem, I do not know what tool I used, but I
could
view them without any problems. It was one of the tools debian 2.1 installed
on my
system. (Now I use suse 6.2, but I have not tested it with this)
So, I personally like PDF a lot better than postscript. Postscript always
leads me into
problems when I generated it on a unix system and I want to use it on a MS
system...
