Not nessecarily. The ROMs are mainly needed for Basic support (which I
myself am not willing to pay for). The games which check for the VDP not by
looking at the VDP-ID but to the MSX version in the ROM instead can quite
easily be patched.

As for Basic-support, the new screens can be accessed by using SCREEN
8:VDP(nn)=x (I don't know which VDP exactly from memory). All commands are
the same (CIRCLE, LINE, etc.), since the MSX2+ also offers very little
support for screen 12. So Basic-programs using those can be adapted even
easier than the Assembly-programs.

And I believe there was a KUN-Basic crack which also added SET SCROLL
support. However I don't know if it also detects the v9958 and takes
advantage of it if present.
