My CDROM-drive also didn't work at first. If I typed DIR, the directory
contents would display awfully slow, copying went fast however. Anyway, the
problem appeared to be that my harddisk and CDROM-drive weren't compatible
at all (although both IDE). If I hooked up the CDROM drive only then it
worked ok, and it works ok with my new HD too. So maybe your problem is
alike. In that case I would advice you to get yourself a more recent (or at
least another) harddisk.
