I don't agree this being a 'faillure'. BDOS behaves exactly as it 
should: treat $ as string termination mark. It is in the specs of the 
function call, so you've tried something illegal ;)

However, your workaround is genious and shows that you're still the 
best and most handsome MSX-coder ;)

BTW. Isn't there a more elegant way of doing a 'locate' in DOS? An 
inter-slot call to the bios?
