Removing the `.' from path has cleared the original error that started this
thread.
I am now getting other errors.  I will study them for a bit and if still
stymied,
I will start a new thread with a better subject line

Many thanks to everyone that looked at this.

To summarize:

Having `.' at the beginning of PATH caused cmake to misbehave.
