I think I've fixed it! I changed my router's MTU from 1458 down to 1400 and all seems to be working now. I have never noticed any other major connection problems, so why Git should need the change I'm not sure. Anyway, I'm pretty happy now. I'll just have to read up about MTU's a bit more and experiment to find the best setting. Thanks to everyone who helped!
