This note is a partial response to Sheila Dehner's questions about
web site localization. I compiled the list below based on some
research that I am conducting about web site localization. It is a list
of tools that are currently available for either creating and managing
multilingual sites, or for the process of localizing them.
The list includes product names, companies, URLs, and prices.
I hope it is helpful. I have looked through all of the web sites listed,
and have a reasonable understanding about what the products provide,
so feel free to ask questions if you'd like.

Two Classifications of Tools
In conducting this research, I found that there are two broad
classifications of tools currently available; those designed for managing
multilingual web sites (referred to in the list below as
"Enterprise/Management Tools"), and those designed for use when
actually localizing web sites (referred to as "Localization Tools".)
ENTERPRISE/MANAGEMENT TOOLS
The tools listed below are used for creating and/or managing multilingual
sites, as opposed to localizing them.

being purchased.

various product options.

Mediasurface (Mediasurface Limited)

Pricing--Depends on the hardware configuration. Mediasurface is priced per
CPU. An Entry level configuration - assuming a single CPU staging server, a
single CPU Live server, the Integration module, and the Reporting modules
would start around $50K. This would not include any SDL software (for actual
translation work.)

The tools listed below are designed to help people with the process of
actually localizing web sites, rather than managing them.
TransWeb Express (Berlitz) (comments from the egroup members stated that
this product is disappointing compared to it's web description. For example,
one person reported that the HTML word count feature reports inaccurate
counts.)

costs $2,400 as a standalone product.
