Hi David,

Well -- I went and visited your web site as you suggest. I am quoting this
statement from there: "My PhD researches the relationship between the (x)
quantity and types of semantic information available to an MT system and (y)
the level of translation performance that the system attains. A large
quantity of work has been done on formal, sophisticated, powerful semantics,
a lot of donkeys have been beaten by men, John has been indicted for the
murder of Mary more times than one cares to remember, but very little has
been done on the type of "stone-age" semantics used by the majority of the
50+ commercial MT systems in existence."

There is actually an MT system (Logos) that could be considered from
"stone-age" according to how long it has existed but which does some of what
you are describing as your project. It is true that there isn't much
literature about the Logos system but I would recommend you read Patty
Schmid's PhD thesis (I am cutting and pasting from the Georgetown library
record
http://library.georgetown.edu/search/aschmid+p/1,3,4,B/frameset&aschmid+patr
icia+m&1,1) which contains a description of the Logos semantic ontology, how
it used in translation and what kind of rules use it. Patty now works at
Microsoft and I don't have her e-mail address there but I guess you could
get her work directly from the library.
