Keywords present a complex translation challenge IF they have been created
to facilitate user retrieval BECAUSE they will be include many synonyms and
associated ideas. Something that is a synonym in one language is unlikely
to be a synonym in another. If you do a straight word for word translation,
you will surely have instances where translated keywords lead to
nonsensical related graphics.
I think keywords are a real localisation task... they must be translated to
match the culture of the locale as well as nuances of the language. Also,
given that you are marketing the images, you will almost certainly find
that the keywords include many associate terms and phrases, so you need to
translate them in their equivalence groups (= the keywords for this image)
to ensure that inappropriate translated terms do not apply.

Hello,
Does anybody know of an application that could run on a web server and
translate keywords (i.e. collections of words that don't necessarily relate
to one-another)?
My company is building an application that sells digital images online, on
behalf of international photographers who wish to sell to overseas markets.
Our image buyers will need to search for images in their native tongue. The
keywords for these images will have been inputted in a variety of
languages.
Our engineers are trying to decide whether we should translate and store
all the translations of the keywords, or whether we should translate on the
fly and only store text in English. Any suggestions?
