Dear MT-List members:

A recent message by Luke Schubert has prompted me to advance the
following information before the official date scheduled.

The Transducens group at the Universitat d'Alacant (Spain) is part of a
consortium who is currently developing open-source MT systems for the
languages of Spain. The project ("Open Source Machine Translation for
the Romance languages of Spain") is funded by the Ministry of Industry,
Tourism and Commerce of Spain trough PROFIT grant number
FIT340101-2004-0003.

In late July 2005 we released version 0.8 of Apertium: an open-source
shallow-transfer machine translation engine and toolbox, together with
linguistic data for the Spanish-Catalan pair. Spanish-Galician data will
be released before the end of 2005.

Apertium is largely based on the algorithms and ideas behind two MT
systems which we have developed and are available through the net:
www.interNOSTRUM.com (Spanish--Catalan) and traductor.universia.net
(Spanish-Portuguese). In addition to Apertium, the consortium will also
release a full-transfer system for the Spanish-Basque pair.

The Apertium project has its own homepage at SourceForge:
http://apertium.sourceforge.net , with documentation, downloads, links
and a test drive.

We will welcome any comments or suggestions.

Thank you

Mikel L. Forcada
