A postdoc position is available in computational linguistics at Université de
Paris. The person recruited will be working in the Laboratoire de Linguistique
Formelle [2].

The research work aims to explore the linguistic properties of neural networks
in machine translation and to use knowledge in translation studies to
qualitatively analyse the effects of linguistic structures and neural
representations on the quality of automatic translations. More specifically,
the candidate will seek to establish a link between certain linguistic
characteristics of source sentences (lexical complexity, syntactic complexity,
...) and the performance of neural translation systems such as OpenNMT or
Nematus.

The ideal profile combines expertise in statistical corpus analysis, natural
language processing, and, if possible, in translation studies or contrastive
linguistics, as well as deep learning skills. However, applications showing
expertise in only part of these fields will be considered carefully.

The position does not entail any teaching obligations.

Research environment :

The postdoc will partake in the The NeuroViz project, funded by the Région Ile
de France [1] which involves four laboratories: LIMSI [3], IRIF [4],
CLILLAC-ARP [5] and LLF.

The person recruited will be affiliated to the LLF and will conduct his or her
research in the laboratory located in the 13th arrondissement of Paris (Grands
Moulins campus). The LLF is an interdisciplinary laboratory that brings
together researchers in computational, experimental, theoretical and
descriptive linguistics. The laboratory has an experiment room with
experimental equipment (eye tracker, SMI glasses, portable EEG, ...) and a
computing infrastructure for deep learning. Research will be supported by a
team of researchers and engineers specialized in linguistic resources, natural
language processing and computer science.

Starting date and salary :

The starting date can be adjusted according to the evolution of the health
situation and the constraints of the candidate. The candidate must have
defended his or her doctoral thesis before taking up the position. The salary
of the position is 2,200 euros net per month.

Application form :

The candidate is requested to send:
- a cv including a list of publications;
- a motivation letter explaining how the candidate sees his/her contribution to
the project;
- the names of 2 referees.

The whole application file must be sent to Guillaume Wisniewski.
