Maybe I'm not reading the git history correctly, but I'm still confused. First, the thread speed-up stuff was merged (daa4661) after the release of v0.9.9.6 (ab58307), so it's not in the official release. Secondly, it is not the threading code that was reverted, but just commit ab58307 -- which is a version string bump and some doc tweaks. After typing the above, I realized that this is well-explained if you meant to revert /to/ commit ab58307. I don't know the best way to revert a merge off the top of my head, but it seems like http://git-scm.com/blog/2010/03/02/undoing-merges.html may be helpful.
