BARTHEZ HAPPY TO STAY AT OLD TRAFFORD

Fabien Barthez has confirmed his ambitions with Manchester United following
suggestions that he was under pressure as the club's number one 'keeper. A hip injury
left the Frenchman on the bench at the start of the season and also required manager
Alex Ferguson to look for cover in the shape of Spanish international Ricardo Lopez,
signed from Valladolid in September, but Barthez said that was as extra cover in case
he needed surgery.

"Alex Ferguson decided to take on another goalkeeper but I managed to avoid surgery.
Everything else is pure invention from the English press," he said. "I'm under
contract with United until 2006. I'm working in good conditions. We are playing the
leading role again. Everything is fine." The French international spoke following the
club's recent 2-0 win over rivals Arsenal, which took them to just three points behind
the reigning champions. The result was part of a series of good team performances, and
Barthez believes that things are starting to look up for United after a shaky start to
the season.

"We are in good spirits because we have just won nine points from three games against
major pretenders to the title," he told French sports daily L'Equipe. "It's a lot of
work but it also is very encouraging for the future. "We were missing five or six
regulars against Arsenal but...all the players played well. We respected instructions
and stayed focused as we did at Liverpool. We have recovered continuity in our
results."
