2-1
What a high! Who needs booze, drugs or even Alan Smith's frilly
knickers?! Just stick Diego on the end of a superb defence-splitting
pass from JSV in the 93rd minute and you're already in Heaven. And
what a goal. He timed his run to perfection and then finished
brilliantly with his left foot.

After a fairly awful first half when we never really got going,
United fully deserved the win on their second half performance.
Chelsea were good in the first half. They marked very tightly and
broke quickly and were helped by our careless passing and pointless
balls lobbed forward that Desailly just gobbled up without breaking
sweat. He had Ruud in his pocket all afternoon.

Phil Nev surprisingly started ahead of JSV and, though he played
okay, it was his losing of the ball in midfield that led to the
Chelsea goal, and the old Chelsea hoodoo looked to be upon us again.
With Becks unable to work his magic on the right and Keano a bit
subdued, we really didn't threaten Cudicini at all. In fact, as at
Anfailed, it took a goalkeeping error to put us back on level terms.
In no danger, Cudicini appeared to slip slightly as he cleared, the
ball fell beautifully to The World's Best Crosser (TM), who zipped in
a perfect cross for Scholesie to nod in (his fifth in five). That was
our only shot on goal (compared to Chelsea's seven) in the first 45
minutes.

All change in the second. Phizza was off, Giggsy was on (to a great
reception) and we were back to 442. Fergie will never accept that
this is United's best formation but the proof was there as the
chances started to mount. Ole hit the post, Cudicini made two
fantastic saves from Ruud and Ole, and Keano had a great opportunity
as well. Both Schoelsie and Keano were in the action again after
quiet first halfs. But the winer just would not come.

On came Diego for Ruud with about 20 minutes left and he forced
Cudicini into another excellent save. With 5 minutes to go, off went
Mikky (who hadn't had one of his better days), and on came Seba. We
had an almighty scare when Zola allowed the ball to skip past him
with only Fabien in his way. And then came the winner. The ball was
won by Keano, Seba took it over, his magnificent pass, Diego's
magnificent strike, and 3 points. Fantastic.

And the players looked pleased as well. They mobbed Diego, even
Fabien came down the pitch to leap on his back.

There was only a few seconds of additional time left but Durkin
played an extra minute. Fergie pointed at his watch and, with a
laugh, clearly said "B*st*rd" but in a good natured way. He knew we'd
won.

The pitch had patches of new turf everywhere and they had a serious
effect on the game with the ball bobbling up unexpectedly. Ifn it
gets any worse, it could wreck the season.

Anyway, a frustrating game in many ways but one of the finishes of
the season.
