I don't think the 'Silver goal' makes any difference
as when teams are given 15 or 30 mins the tendency
is to not make a mistake as they know the lottery
of penalties is near.

If both teams start the game knowing someone 'has'
to score perhaps a more positive attitude may be
adopted. I don't think the 5 hour scenario would
happen as obviously it would be pointless.

The reason they introduced the so-called "silver goal"
was because teams
were being too defensive at the thought of the sudden
death involved in the
"golden goal." Having an unlimited golden goal could
be horrendous. Imagine
watching two Italian teams playing 4 or 5 hours of
extra time too afraid to
cross the halfway line. It could mean the death of
football as we know it,
and probably the death of thousands of viewers
watching the game on TV.

But penalties is a lousy way to lose a game. What
about reducing the number
of players to 6 or 7 a side? That would open up big
gaps all over the field
and would probably lead to a winning goal fairly
quickly. (I'm assuming the
Italian sides won't play a team consisting of a goalie
and six defenders.)
