Azamin asked: > I would like to ask our american friends here... why did the americans call football soccer...? where did the word came from...?
The word didn't come from the Americans. It's British. There are two kinds of football: rugby football and association football. "Soccer" is just an alteration and abbreviation of "asSOCiation". The word "soccer" used to be quite common in the UK as well, mainly, I think, among the middle classes, who were never much interested in it, but "football" has always been more common. I suspect the Americams preferred to call the game "soccer" rather than "football" because a game called "football" already existed in the States ... the game where the players rarely use their feet. They should have called it "American rugby" and then there'd be no confusion. Terry ------------------------ Yahoo!
