SWINDON TOWN were last night taught a footballing lesson by a United side with an average age of just 19.
Despite the absence of all of their household names the Premiership champions still had more than enough for their second division counterparts. Swindon began with their usual 3-5-2 formation with Stef Miglioranzi again employed in a sweeper role while the versatile Grant Smith was asked to partner Sam Parkin in attack. And it was Town who had the first chance when a bright run from Sammy Igoe saw him cross towards David Duke who volleyed into the side netting. However, United's youngters announced themselves when Paul Tierney crossed and Eddie Johnson fired home the opener off the inside of the post. United doubled their lead on 23 minutes with a desperately soft goal. Neil Wood's corner was headed in by Phil Bardsley who was unmarked inside the six yard box. Brian Howard could have narrowed the deficit soon after but he lifted his half-volley over the bar. Miglioranzi had one of the few openings for the Robins during the first half when a loose ball dropped to him inside the area, but the American volleyed well wide. Town were made to pay again when Phil Picken fired in a tremendous 30-yarder to make the score 3-0. Duke pulled one back with a fine acrobatic volley after Adi Viveash had headed back a free-kick. At half-time Town intoduced French trialist Michel. However, it was United's half-time sub David Poole who capitalised on a poor defensive header from Viveash to score United's fourth. A flurry of substitutions near the end saw Keith O'Halloran make his first first team appearance for 22 months following his broken leg in September 2002. Swindon (3-5-2): Griemink (Evans 46); Heywood, Miglioranzi (Nicholas 74), Viveash (Martin 74); Robinson, Hewlett (O'Halloran 73), Igoe (Herring 84), Howard, Duke; Parkin (Young 84), Smith (Michel 46 sub Stevenson 70).
