Dec 1st 1979 Tottenham (1) 1 Hoddle 31 United (0) 2 Macari 60 Coppell 87 att 51,389 Second half goals from Lou Macari and Steve Coppell in this splendid match against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane assured United of of remaining in the prized top spot in the First Division. In keeping with recent performances at Tottenham, United reserved their best play for the period after the interval when they had to fight back from a goal down. Glenn Hoddle, who had shone in his England debut against Bulgaria some ten days before, was in fine form for Spurs in the opening moments and it was he who commenced the scoring in the 31st minute, with a low shot after receiving the ball from Ricardo Villa, another of the Londoners better players. It was a goal Spurs deserved but they couldn't add to it, and in the second half United went from strength to strength. Joe Jordan and Lou Macari never gave up running and chasing for the ball and it was good to see Macari get the goal that put United back in the game. It came in the 60th minute when Sammy McIlroy, having collected the ball from a Jimmy Nicholl cross, put in a shot-cum-cross on the Spurs goal. It ran just as far as Macari and the little Scot hammered it home from close in. It was a fair reward for their efforts and it looked to have won a valuable point until three minutes from the end when Steve Coppell scored a goal made possible Joe Jordan to give United their second away win of the season.
