BARTHEZ READY FOR RETURN Fabien Barthez is ready to return on Wednesday - almost four months since making his last appearance for Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson says the France World Cup winner will be in goal when United take on Sporting Lisbon in a friendly in Portugal - but Barthez knows he will have a battle on his hands to hold on to his place for the Community Cup game against Arsenal in Cardiff on Sunday. With American signing Tim Howard emerging as the man most likely to take up the goalkeepers' gloves when the new season gets underway, Barthez has the opportunity of staking a claim as first choice in the closing game of United's summer trip. The Frenchman missed the four game tour of America after being given extended leave following the Confederations Cup during June, but Ferguson says he is ready to turn to him this week for the game which marks the opening of Sporting's new stadium. "Fabien will play in Portugal. He needs a game and he may possibly play in the Community Shield next Sunday, but that is something we need to address when the time comes," said the United boss. With Howard, Roy Carroll, Spain's number two Ricardo as well as Barthez on United's books, Ferguson added: "There is real competition for a place in the side but I don't think there is anything wrong with competition. The important thing is how the lads handle it themselves." Barthez last played for United in the 4-3 Champions League quarter-final win over Real Madrid at Old Trafford on 23 April. www.teamtalk.com http://www.red11.org/news ------------------------ Yahoo!
