Manchester United look set to pay a high price following the international break with five players doubtful for Saturday's trip to Charlton.
Rio Ferdinand and Nicky Butt have joined John O'Shea on the injured list after pulling out of England's Euro 2004 qualifier against Liechtenstein at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, and with Paul Scholes and Diego Forlan also doubtful, Sir Alex Ferguson faces major selection problems. Ferdinand has not fully recovered from the kidney infection which ruled him out of United's 1-0 defeat at Southampton, and Scholes is being forced to rest while a stomach muscle tear heals. O'Shea twisted an ankle during the Republic of Ireland's 1-1 draw with Russia in Dublin on Saturday, and will undergo treatment all week to see if he can be included, while Butt suffered a similar fate during England's win in Macedonia. His injury is less serious than O'Shea's and the midfielder may make it, but back up striker Forlan seems unlikely to feature. He completes a 16,000-mile round trip to Montevideo and Paraguay with the Uruguayan squad on Friday and could be ruled out of Ferguson's plans for the weekend because of tiredness.
