In many ways Salie, I think you are right. More than a few eyebrows were raised when Fergie plucked for Dion Dublin as his summer signing of 1992. In the 1991/92 season we had won only 5 of our last 18 league games and lost 3 of the last 4. Our inability to put the ball in the net cost us vital points in the run in - e.g. a 1-1 draw with Chelsea when they were absolute shite. Fergie tried to sign Mick Hardford from Luton Town on a short term contract and then on loan, but Luton were having none of it and a dream died at Anfield in April 92.
I did not think at the time that Dion Dublin was the answer to our problems, but later is his career he proved to be an excellent player for both Coventry & Aston Villa. He was so unlucky to break his leg (I think against Crsytal Palace) and end up on the sidelines for a long spell. Although it was a disaster our top signing was out, the cloud had a silver lining. While Dion was out, Fergie only had Sparky & Choccy to choose from (I think Mark Robins had exited to Dinamo Dresden at that point) and he simply had to go into the transfer market. How it was done though is still the stuff of legend. Howard Wilkinson & his chairman phoned Martin Edwards to ask about the availability of Denis Irwin. Fergie says "no way" and then suddenly he scribbles on a piece of paper to Edwards to ask about Eric Cantona. And the rest is history. -----Original Message----- From: Salie Rashaad The 1990's and Eric Cantona who of course arrived at Leeds on-loan as cover for Lee Chapman when Chapman was injured in an FA Cup defeat by Manchester United.
