This article is available at www.manutd.com I had to laugh when Fergie says
he's never sought revenge. Wenger will be one to testify that there is no
man better at gaining revenge than Fergie !

Alex Ferguson says his first competitive return to Ibrox as Manchester
United manager will not be a matter of exacting revenge on his former club.

Ferguson returns to his home City of Glasgow this week, to Govan, the area
where he grew up as a boy. Having grown up under the shadow of Ibrox,
Ferguson played for The Gers between 1967 and 1969 before his move to
Falkirk at the end of the '69 season, a disappointing end to Ferguson's
Ibrox playing career.

But Ferguson rejects the notion that Wednesday night is his long-awaited
opportunity of vengeance.

"As soon as the draw came out, there were headlines about revenge," Ferguson
explained. "Absolute nonsense. Christ, I've never sought revenge in my life.
It's not an issue, but I'm going to be keyed up and I hope my players are."

Ferguson has returned as both player and manager, but has been more received
a far hotter reception as a manager.

"They always respected a trier, and I was certainly that," Ferguson says of
his return to Ibrox as a player. "But when I've come back there as a manager
(with Aberdeen and once, in 1994 for a friendly with Manchester United) it's
been a different matter."

The United manager's homecoming is an annoyance more than anything, not
least because of the painfully predictable 'Battle of Britain' hype, but
more so because of suddenly rekindled connections back home.

"To me, this tie is a nuisance," Sir Alex said. "I mean that, an absolute,
bloody nuisance. I've had so many begging for tickets, one from my old
primary school signed William Wallace."

Such is Ferguson's experience, and sheer determination, however, that he
will go to Ibrox as hungry as ever to get three points - and expects his
players to travel north of the border with the same mentality.

"Will the situation bring out the best in my players? It'll bring out the
best in me!" Ferguson said. "The Nevilles, Scholes, Butt and Giggs have seen
it before, and I hope the only thing on their minds is that Ibrox is an
opportunity to get points towards the target of 10 to qualify for the next
round."

The current season brings with the usual targets for Fergie, a Premiership
title wanted and expected in equally high measures, and the holy grail -
another European Cup.

It is doubtless, at the root of Fergie's unyielding desire to continue as
Manchester United manager, is his craving to reclaim Europe's most
sought-after silverware. And this season is no different.

"I've started this season hoping to win the European Cup," Ferguson openly
admits. "But then I start every season believing we'll win it. Stuttgart
taught us a lesson - you never seem to stop learning that lesson. We threw
it away in five minutes, it's concentration. It always seems to be there."

As long as there are still lessons to be learnt, and a second European crown
to be won, it is unquestionable Ferguson will remain in the United hot-seat
- a trip to Ibrox or not.
