While I'm at it, any ammo I can get for convincing my parents that
he really *will* talk well soon in English and that it will all be
SO worth it once he's totally bilingual would be useful

Honestly, once you move to the States, your challenge will be
maintaining the Spanish, which will only be accomplished by keeping
it going at home and keep him responding in Spanish...Once you live
in the States for a couple of months, you will see the transition
happening to English only, and unless you insist in keeping the
conversational Spanish going, he will lose it..Just tell his grand
parents to give him a couple of months and they shall his English
take off and live the growth by themselves..
When we moved to the States, my oldest son was four at the time, and
he was speaking Spanish only... within months, his English was as
good as his Spanish, and within a year, the English took over and
now it is his first language, but he, now 8, is fully bilingual,
because I always kept the Spanish going at home...If they speak to
me in English, I always ask them to say it in Spanish. However, he
reads and writes better in English. I am working with curriculum
now to get his Spanish to be as good as his English..
My 5 year old was only 21 months when we moved, so he did not have
as much exposure, and consequently, English became his first
language even faster than it happened with my oldest.
Good luck! And keep the Spanish going!:)
