Well, where did you get the Multisync package from? The multisync site?
I think the rpm's are built on RedHat, so it is not that surprising if
there are broken requirements.

Evolution 1.4 is much better, nicer and less buggy, than 1.2,  so it was
a good idea to upgrade anyway :-)

For starters, does evolution 1.4 work for you? 

If you try to set MULTISYNC_DEBUG=1 before you start multisync, what
does it say? There should be some lines beginning with "Trying /.../".
Is there any line for libevolution_sync.so?

It sounds like there is something you missed to install, that multisync
depends on. For the evolution plugin you need at least the evolution
development package (probably called evolution-dev or evolution-devel),
and maybe some other -devel packages too... some gnome development
packages maybe?

When running ./configure you should have got some errors/warnings that
certain features that multisync needs are missing.
