I am requesting some advice on if/how I can manage all my stuff with MultiSync. Please reply with any advice, wisdom, experience or ideas.
My devices: *Palm V *Toshiba E740 (PocketPC 2002) *Siemens M55 (SyncML)
Software I use on my WinXP PC: *Outlook XP (Calendar, tasks, notes, email via IMAP) *ThunderBird (email via IMAP) *Mozilla Calendar for subscribing to ical calendars (ex.: icalshare.com)
Web applications I use: *IMP Webmail (via IMAP) (horde.org/imp) *Tiki CMS/Groupware (tikiwiki.org) *Tutos (tutos.org) (I only need one way sync)
I think it's pretty clear why I need a sync mechanism. ;-)
General info:
My initial thought was to have an open source server solution in PHP. AFAICT, they are not yet mature enough: http://www.horde.org/sync/ and http://sourceforge.net/projects/boheme/. Sync4j looks pretty good but is in Java. MultiSync seems to come closest to synching all my stuff with SynCE, Palm, LDAP and SyncML plugins.
*My emails are already efficiently kept in sync across my different mail clients thanks to IMAP. My Siemens M55 phone even has an IMAP mail client (!) which I haven't tested yet. Therefore, I would like to sync tasks, contacts, calendar & notes.
*It would be sweet if I could access my contacts list from within my different mail clients. My current idea is to setup my contacts in OpenLdap so that it may be accessible by Outlook XP, ThunderBird and IMP Webmail (via Turba). OpenLDAP does feel like an overkill however...
*I would prefer to avoid remote SyncML with my Siemens M55 phone because I don't have unlimited GPRS. I would still like to have optional remote synching for emergencies and coolness factor. I have not bought a cable yet but intend to. I am not sure if I should take the MA-8720c, DCA-510 or another?
*My phone is limited to 500 contacts. I have more than 500 so how should I handle it? An archive group for rarely used (and rarely modified) numbers? In general, my phone & PDA has less space than Outlook. How does MultiSync handle this?
*I am a project admin for Tiki CMS/Groupware. I see that a PHPGroupware plugins is "In the pipe". Since PHPGroupware & Tiki share the same LGPL license, down the road, I hope we can port the code and that I eventually may have all my data in Tiki. Tiki has a MyTiki section which includes webmail, notes, tasks, calendar and contacts. Synching notes <-> wiki pages would be very interesting & powerful. MultiSync could become a way to update a wiki offline. This would be most useful for places where Internet connections are unstable or expensive.
Wishlist: Down the road, I think it would be really sweet for MultiSync to handle bookmarks and login (username/password) information.
Thanks for reading. I look forward to your advice.
Best regards,
-- M ;-)
