Q:
What is the difference between setting an object to null and calling dispose
method of the object ?
A:
Setting an object to "null" just removes the reference of the object i.e.
when we do "obj = null" we can no longer refer to the object we created
using the statement "Object obj = new Object()" but the object is still
alive in the memory. If we try to use the reference 'obj'(i.e. obj.dispose
or obj.tostring or anything else) after setting it to null it will give a
"System.NullReferenceException".
When we do "obj.dispose()" the object is actually disposed off all its
resources.
Regards,
Praveen
