The good news is that lots of folks have done that. The bad news is
that the technique is vendor and card specific. Some cards have
specific APDUs to extract a public key and/or a certificate. Some
cards just use READ BINARY on a file.
Of course, card manufacturers could have followed the ISO 7816-8
standard which calls for simply returning the public key from the key
generation but that would make smart cards generally useful and we
certainly don't want that, do we?
