Hi, I warn you that I don't know OS from apple. I don't know why you need to do this update but if it is for the CCID compliance, do it. In the future CCID will be the standard for all the USB readers. All the CCID readers may use a same driver.
I have some SCR331 and I have updated the firmware on all my readers in order to be CCID compliant. Now, my readers work fine with the generic CCID driver [1] on linux. Read the README in the tarball. It seems work on MacOS X/Darwin. You have also an other CCID driver for Mac OS X [2]. The SCR331 is not in the list of the readers supported by this driver but if after the update of the firmware it is CCID compliant, it may works.
