I'm not sure that the /etc/reader.conf file is correct. I used the ./installifd utility to create it, but just *guessed* at what I/O port to use, just choosing "USR1 (Sym Link Defined)". The contents of the /etc/reader.conf file are:
The USB drivers DO NOT use /etc/reader.conf. Remove this file and start again.
I modified pcscd to print a warning message when such a mistake is detected.

do you know anything new about my problem with the usb reader on kernel 2.6 where I it doesn�t work without the reader.conf?
Are there any differences between 2.4 and 2.6 in usb handling that could cause this?
How do you detect the available readers?
If you need any special info that I can gather just tell me what I should check.
