Hi Amanda,
maybe you want to try [1]. I've as well struggled to get the musclecard
applet up and running. [1] describes how it worked for me.

Ok, XCard II is recognizing the card now, but I can't do anything!
First, when I click to load MuscleCard Applet, it shows the following error:
MSCGetStatus failed
Code: Feature unsupported
Then, if I try to format the card, typing PIN and unblock code, it shows
the following error:
Invalid parameter
Last, trying to create PIN results:
CreatePIN failed
Code: Feature unsupported
What is happening?
Thanks,
Amanda

You already have the tool installed, you don't need to compile it.
If you want source code for this, issue the command:
apt-get source libmusclecard1
