That's what I wrote a few days ago (although my mail to the list seems to have
gotten lost).

I remember SCM having extra libraries on top of PC/SC using special
SCardControls for accessing memory cards (with special functions for each type
of memory card, like i2c cards etc).

Also, I remember early Kobil readers and drivers which required the
application to select a special DF on the card (even though the card doesn't
really have DFs, but such a command switched the reader into a special mode
which which allowed for reading of KV cards).

AFAIK that was required for the process of getting those readers certified for
use by German health professionals. In that special mode cards can only be
read but not written. Without this special mode those readers blocked commands
to the card.

Maybe something like this is still implemented into the firmware of those
readers. OTOH even the connection to such cards fails nowadays while it worked
at least a few years ago.

I used to access KV cards with a Kobil Kaan Advanced USB from within
libchipcard while it had its own resource manager (today libchipcard just uses
PC/SC). I was able to connect the card by cycling through a list of protocols
until the card was responsive. However, my last test a few weeks ago was
unsuccessful. Since I didn't change the firmware of the reader something else
must have changed...

So basically the Kobil Kaan Advanced USB *is* in fact able to connect such
cards, it seems to be a matter of the surrounding software (driver and
software).

That wouldn't do you any good, I believe. As soon as the card is connected you
can use e.g. SCardControls from part 10 (e.g. READER_DIRECT, UNIVERSAL etc)
which are designed exactly for the purpose of allowing a CTAPI-like access to
the reader. But that's only *after* you get to connect the card...

Or maybe you could just connect the reader in direct mode and then use the
part 10 commands. Maybe the reader allows for KV card connection while in that
mode (since it was introduced by Kobil and others chiefly for exactly that type
of access). However, I guess Kobil will know more about that.

Regards
Martin
