Actually there is a reference to CCID in [1] which I did not see at first (and USB 2.0 and 1.1), a document already branded as HID. And a changeset in OpenCT that talks about adding support for CM4040 to OpenCT CCID driver [2]. So *maybe* it is easier these days. They also talk about Linux support, you could ask the vendor for an (open source) driver as well.
