Compare `hg parents` to `hg tip`. New clones check out a very old revision by default, due to a bug in the CVS conversion process (to be fixed after 1.6 "hell froze over"). After clone, hg up -C tip should get you back to the future. (this is mentioned on dev.mutt.org)
