Based on *experience* at home and at work, direct SMTP access is much more reliable than using the gateway. BTW, for my 3G access, I am not aware of any gateway from the ISP. And I won't choose a different ISP (more expensive, less reliable for the connection itself) just because it doesn't provide an e-mail gateway.
