 Why the complicated reproduction steps?  Seems to me that just writing a
 message with a line containing nothing but a dot would work as well.

 By default mutt's $sendmail setting includes the -oi option telling
 sendmail not to consider a lone dot as the end of the message.  Have you
 modified that option, or does exim not honor it?

 In either case I don't think this is a mutt bug.  Mutt is designed with
 the expectation that the sendmail implementation will allow bare dots.
