Hi Allen,

Thanks for your feedback.  I suspect these problems may have to do with
my removal of the
  (ret == GNUTLS_E_AGAIN || ret == GNUTLS_E_INTERRUPTED)
loop.  I believe the screen resize will generate a SIGWINCH, and that
may be the reason for the mailbox closing.

These issues, along with the point Arnt raised, lead me to believe this
may be the wrong approach to fix this problem.  I have something on my
todo list, but this will definitely be a post-1.6 issue.
