I did try again and got it to work. I'm not sure what I did last time.

Well what I really want is to be able to delete only the message that is
currently selected, based on the criteria. I've read up a bit on the macro
stuff, and I noticed that there didn't seem to be a single-message
equivalent of delete-pattern.
The thing is that I never want to delete *all* messages that aren't marked
O or N (although that's better than not being able to do it at all), because
I like to save at least a month worth of mail.
Any way to limit delete-pattern to only one message? I'm guessing that if it
is, it would be in the form of a new criteria (i.e. ~<current-message> or
something).

That one was more or less unreadable (^Hs everywhere). But I read the
corresponding document on the web now that someone pointed me in the
right direction (I've been there before, but the pattern matching
didn't ring a bell).
