I use mutt/cygwin/imap for my work email. Ran into this problem trying to read some old mbox I'd archived (mass tag&save from imap server to mbox file). My muttrc is on a mapped drive (which cygwin sees as $HOME), the mboxes are on a local disk. Was getting that error until I moved the mbox to the mapped drive. I was also able to copy the mbox to my home ubuntu box and read just fine. jake
