When I moved from mutt 1.4 to 1.5 (quite a while ago) I found that new
mail detection in mbox stopped working.

I never worked out why and eventually gave up and moved to maildir for
my incoming mailboxes but I'd move back to mbox immediately if I know
how to fix the new mail issue.

... oh, this is on an Ubuntu Linux system.
