How to handle mailing list

Hello all

I am a newbie to mutt and want to read the emails from the mailing 
list. But I don't know how. I follow the instructions by just adding 
    'lists comp.lang.c'
    'subscribe comp.lang.c'
into my ~/.muttrc. However, I doesn't work. No emails were sent to my 
mailbox. 

Now I am using offlineimap to retrieve gmail periodically. But I am 
confused with the mailing list. Should I download them locally and if 
so, how? I don't make any modification in my ~/.offlineimaprc now.
