Hehe, we fell victim to what I call the presentation effect. -- I was
explaining a thing but didn't follow it myself.  I.e. I replied to you alone
instead of to the list.  That's why there was neither the list address in my
message, nor any other ML header.  Thus, your mutt could not find any mailing
list information in my message.

Even when I commented out the subscribe line in my muttrc, mutt is still able
to find out about a mailing list if the message in question carries the
appropriate ML headers, such as List-Post (press h to see all headers when
reading a message).

PS.: With the lists string you tell mutt about addresses which you know are
mailing lists. And with the subscribe string you tell it to what lists you are
actually subscribed.  Subscribed addresses are considered known, so there is no
need to add an address to both subscribe and lists (see the mutt manual for a
detailed explanation¹).
