Darn, didn't see the mutt on the end of the line. Sorry. And since you're doing it on the command line, it's not quite the same language problem as I have with xterms, including one with mutt. I.e. LANG does not take if the xterm (with mutt) is auto-started at gnome initialisation. (There's a dialogue-box thingy for adding start-up applications) Then Cyrillic, Greek, Russian characters will not render. BUT if I open a new xterm _after_ gnome is all there, then an "xterm -lc" does honour the UTF8 locale, and the characters display fine. I don't know if that xterm-related datapoint muddies the waters in a beneficial way. Erik
