Sorry, I may have misunderstood. If you're in the select key menu, showing a list of matching keys, you can hit 'q' to exit the menu. It should then display a prompt: "Enter keyID for xxx: ". You should then be able to hit ctrl-g at that prompt and it will bring you back to the compose menu. C-g is a 'generic' abort key for prompts.
