This reply doesn't really address your question, but I did want to
thank you for pointing out the mairix tool! 

My idea of searching large volumes of e-mail to date has been to use
grepmail, but it has its own shortcomings (and searching base64-encoded
messages or attachments is a bust) and it definitely isn't fast. 

Searching online did find the following page that might be a place to

I've also toyed with the idea of standing up an Elasticsarch instance 
to store all of my e-mail and have it also double as a search engine, 
but a decent amount of programming would be required, not to mention
figuring out how I would use it with mutt (outside of a grepmail-style
approach).
