There is a post at https://baty.net/posts/2024/02/searching-in-mutt-with-notmuch/ explaining the author's use of notmuch in mutt, which I plan to try out. Much less elegantly, I wrote the imaginatively named `mailfinder`[1] for searching maildirs and mboxes for a legal discovery process. Its concurrent (across mailboxes) and pretty fast, but doesn't offer any indexing or virtual mailboxes (which sound cool).
