Ted, thank you for your comprehensive answer, it was very useful and it works
like a charm.
And you are right, "hg fetch" is much easier than downloading and installing
XPI extensions repeatedly.
Thanks for your help :)

after some changes at vimperator.org site I can't find page to
download latest snapshots of muttator (prepared XPI files).
Instructions on http://vimperator.org/trac/wiki/Muttator/Source are
maybe for developers or programers, but I'm only advanced user. Is
somewhere that kind of web page, where this nightly snapshots for
download are linked?
It is my impression that now that Vimperator-labs has moved to Google
Code, nightly XPIs are not going to be built.
However, I think you'll find that downloading the source directly gives
you the same functionality but is actually much easier to maintain. It
looks like you're using Shredder on Linux. Correct? Off the top of my
head, I don't remember where the Thunderbird profile directory is on
Linux. I have a feeling it's in someplace like...
~/.thunderbird/profiles/*.default/
or something like that. Under that profile directory, you'll find an
"extensions" directory. In it presently, there should be a directory...
~/.thunderbird/profiles/*.default/extensions/[email protected]/
You can remove that directory and *replace* it with a single-line
*file*, and Shredder will look in that destination for what it usually
finds in that directory. Keeping this in mind:
1.) Clone a vimperator-labs repository from the website. You'll need
Mercurial ("hg") installed to do this. You can then use the "hg clone
..." command listed on the source page.
2.) In the "[email protected]" file (not directory) discussed above,
put the absolute path to the "muttator" folder inside the repository
created with your "hg clone" command.
When you restart Shredder, it will be using the repository. To pull down
updates (which you can do nightly or more often than that), go into the
repository and issue:
hg pull
hg update -C
Alternatively, create a file in your home directory called .hgrc (that
is, create a file ~/.hgrc) that has this in it:
[extensions]
hgext.fetch =
Then whenever you want to update your muttator, go into the
vimperator-labs repository and issue:
hg fetch
(and restart Shredder).
For me, using "hg fetch" is much easier than installing a nightly XPI
over and over again.
I hope that helps --
Ted
