I used iReports (based on Jasper) for real complex needs and it works very good in production. It takes a SQL string with a dynamic where clause, and does a bad based report with complex group total formulas.

At the last NJMVC meeting John mentioned that you were looking into using Jasper Reports. I have started to look at it and looks fairly complete, although for real documentation I guess you have to buy the book.
I haven't looked at too many others in the depth that I have looked at Jasper. I started to look at XReporter and 'Generic Report Writer' although they didn't look as complete. I have a huge reporting need so if you have any insights into why you chose Jasper, they would be appreciated.
If you like I'll send over any information I find as I go through this.
Thanks.
