I did search to show how I would do it, but as P. Shanti point out .... no need to try everything best practice ( like runway models, no need to dress like that) but just an example.
Also, as you know, as soon as TC5 and Resin 3 work, older versions (TC4 and Resin 2) are gone from Suite download, 'cause JSP2.0 is cool with EL and all.
And I plan to make a war file.... one day.

That's what it was - Xerces. I replaced xercesImpl.jar and xmlParserAPIs.jar with Xerces 2.0.1 versions and basicportal is now running under 5.0.
